Enron & Friends' reviews of movies related to current events
-
Penn & Teller: Bullshit! (season 6), ten episodes
of the TV show in which two stage magicians challenge widely held irrational beliefs.
-
Shoot Down, a documentary covering
the 1996 incident in which the Cuban air force shot down two unarmed light planes
flown by the organization Brothers to the Rescue.
-
King Corn, which examines the crop that
fuels our junk-food industry. One of the best of these earnest little
documentaries.
-
Sicko, in which Michael Moore takes on
the health insurance industry.
-
Civic Duty, a hybrid of thriller and
social-issue film, addressing the balance of vigilance and paranoia, as an
unemployed accountant becomes more and more fixated on watching possibly suspicious
activities by his young Arab neighbor.
-
Dixie Chicks: Shut Up And Sing, a
record on film (or video, anyway) of the furor that erupted when the Dixie Chicks
came out against the Iraq war, how the country music media tried to blackball them,
and how the conflict invigorated their musical creativity, leading to a comeback
and a new audience.
-
Free Lisl: Fear And Loathing In Denver, a
documentary about the cause that Hunter S. Thompson took up, and carried through to
success, in his final years: overturning the conviction of Lisl Auman, who was
sentenced to life in prison solely for minor, incidental and peripheral involvement
with someone who ended up shooting a cop.
-
Memron, a mockumentary about the aftermath
of the disintegration of a crooked corporation, which might just possibly have some
resemblance to a real life bankrupt company.
-
Al Franken: God Spoke, a documentary
following the everyday activities of liberal author and radio host Al Franken as
he takes on "Lies and the lying liars who tell them", and evolves from comedian to
gadfly to activist to, perhaps, candidate for office.
-
United 93, the story of the final hijacked
airplane on September 11, on which the passengers rose up to stop the hijackers from
reaching their target.
-
Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room, a
documentary looking at what kind of people created all the crime and scandal at Enron.
